Debra Jason's Soul Art

What Inspired you to do a Soul Art journey?

An artist friend told me about it. I’ve done a few group paint along sessions (via Zoom) and have always enjoyed the camaraderie with and insights from fellow alcohol ink artists. Therefore, Soul Art Day sounded like a great opportunity to connect with other creatives around the world.

How would you describe your creative process?

Good question. I paint with alcohol inks and they have a mind of their own. So even when I sit down to paint with an idea in mind, the inks may take me in a different direction altogether. For instance, one day I sat down to rework a piece and I thought it was going to be flowers, but I accidentally poured too much ink and the whole piece shifted from flowers to what ended up looking like a galaxy.

Sometimes it frustrates me, but for the most part I’ve learned to “go with the flow.”

What insight did you receive from your Soul Art?

During the morning portion of the program, many artists revealed that when they start their work(s) they don’t know where the piece will take them. It was a comfort to me that other artists start from a place of “not knowing.” I thought I was alone in that thought.

What is the most important thing you would like to share about your Soul Art experience?

While each artist was painting their own creation it still felt like a collaborative effort. It’s enlightening to see how others think about and interpret their pieces – some were SO deep & passionate. For a moment I thought “Wow, my work is not that deep. I just paint.” But one thing I continue to work on for myself is to do my best to avoid what I call “comparisonitis.” I enjoyed the diversity of personalities as well as the variety of beautiful pieces each artist created. Thank you Laura for bringing us together.
