Heather Hughes's Soul Art

What Inspired you to do a Soul Art journey?

I saw Laura Hollick’s post on Facebook and just knew I had to sign up. Art was always frowned on in my family and I suppressed my creativity from an early age. Recently I’ve felt lonely and lost and felt I needed to connect, and this was just the perfect opportunity.

How would you describe your creative process?

I took the day off work to join in, normally I plan and deliberate for ages, sketch, run through stuff in my imagination. I didn’t know what to expect with Soul Art Day so was totally unprepared, so just went with the flow, using pastels. The hardest bit was picking the images, and it felt important to include them in the artwork. Once the pictures were picked, everything happened very fast, and I knew I wanted to focus on my heart and hips and open hands. Music is a must, it really helps me get in the mood. I often dance, but didn’t need to today.

What insight did you receive from your Soul Art?

I never think of myself as an artist but I loved what I did today. I learnt to just be myself, let me be, let it flow, it can be hard to start, but once the momentum gets going, things just flow… I learnt to be brave, be daring, be vulnerable, to open my heart, and enjoy life to the full. And I need to get close to water!

What is the most important thing you would like to share about your Soul Art experience?

I don’t think I could have done it without joining Soul Art Day, it really helped knowing other people around the world were doing the same thing as me. I’m so glad I did it and would love to join again.
