Trees are a re-occurring theme in my work. One of the guiding principles in my work is that everything is essentially energy; an intelligent creative energy that connects us all spiritually. I think that you can feel this energy flow through my depiction of trees – always amazingly beautiful, soulful and full of character, these trees are alive, they breathe, they are wise and loving; they are like old friends.

Toni Carmine Salerno’s Soul Art Hall of Fame Interview

How would you describe your art?

My art is beyond words, it requires no thinking. There is nothing to understand, they are just colours, feelings and emotions that are felt in the heart. An open heart is all that is required. There is no particular meaning, each work may trigger something in the viewer or it may not.

Each work is simply about love.

What are the biggest challenges you faced as an artist, and how did you overcome them?

Soul Art, the Art of Love, intuitive art, healing art, these are all good descriptions for the type of work that I do. Perhaps the greatest challenge has been that originally was trying to make my work fit into main stream galleries and venues and this did not work. It was only when I embraced the fact, that my art was about spirit, about love, healing and soul, that things started moving and working for me.

What role do you feel an artist plays in our society today?

I feel that artists are starting to play a bigger role in our society. More and more people around the world are seeing the true value and importance of art, creativity and spirituality. To me these are essentially the same thing. The power of art, the power of imagination, the power of soul, the power of spirit, the power of love, the power of creativity, the power of creation; these are the essence of life and the essence of who we are. There is no greater power and people are starting to understand this.

What is most important to you as an artist?

Love, compassion and kindness, and the appreciation of art and beauty; the inner beauty and light that exists in everyone and everything.
